Jedburgh Abbey

On Sunday I went to Jedburgh Abbey. An Abbey is a big type of church that monks lived in. It was built in 1100 and was only finished in 1250, so took 150 years to build! The Abbey is now about 900 years old. Jedburgh is near the border with England. The Abbey was destroyed by invading English armies in the 1500s, almost 500 years ago! When we were looking at it some bits where blocked off because it was too dangerous to go there. It took half an hour to drive there from where i am staying. Only the stone walls are left and it was covered in lichen. Lichen grows when the air is fresh and it’s not a plant and it’s not a animal. Jedburgh is full of old houses and buildings so we went to Mary Queen of Scots house which is 500 years old also.
